While the Ultrabook brand never took off as Intel may have hoped, the specs for super-thin and svelte laptops haven’t completely disappeared. Samsung is still a notable adherent to the concept, as its latest Notebook 9 lineup showed when it was first introduced at this year’s CES.
At that time, Samsung revealed some of the specs for its latest Ultrabooks, but the pricing was unknown and the availability was given as “early 2016.” That time is now upon us, as the Notebook 9 series has gone on sale, with a starting price of $999.99 for the 13.3-inch version and $200 more for the 15-inch edition.
The smaller laptop truly embraces the “ultra” in Ultrabook, tipping the scales at a mere 1.9 pounds. (In comparison, the Apple MacBook is 2.03 pounds with a 12-inch display, and the 13.3-inch MacBook Air weighs in about a pound heavier.) But as the price tag would lead you to believe, the Notebook 9 is also well-spec’d, coming with an Intel Core i5 Skylake processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive, and full HD (1,920×1,080) display resolution.
If you need more computer in a slightly larger package, the 15-inch Notebook 9 still weighs about the same as the 13.3-inch MacBook Air with a bigger screen. For the $1,199.99 starting price, it also features a more powerful Core i7 CPU, but retains the other specs of its smaller sibling, including the same resolution despite the bigger display.
Even if pricier than typical laptops, the new family provides a cheaper alternatives to Samsung’s other Notebook 9 variants: the Spin and the Pro. The 13.3-inch Spin comes with a Core i7 processor and hinged display for $1,299.99, while the 15-inch Pro sports a 4K display and an Nvidia discrete graphics card for $1,499.99.
